Beachfront views, elevated areas major picks for luxury home buyers in Cairns

first_imgREIQ Cairns zone chairman Tom Quaid said city views rate highly among luxury home buyers. PICTURE: BRENDAN RADKECAIRNS’ inner-city suburbs and the northern beaches are the two major hot spots for the region’s big-budget luxury homes. It’s all about the views and elevated areas or beachfront locations tend to be the pick of these homeowners. According to REIQ Cairns zone chairman Tom Quaid, most Cairns luxury homes were purpose-built for families and tended to be larger. View from the top of Summerhill Drive in City View Mooroobool. PICTURE: ANNA ROGERSMore from newsCairns home ticks popular internet search terms2 days agoTen auction results from ‘active’ weekend in Cairns2 days agoWhile luxury homes in the northern beaches were well serviced with multiple shopping centres, restaurants, takeaway options, schools and medical clinics, the big-budget homes and their amenities varied in Cairns’ inner suburbs. “City View has been a very popular (choice) for having a good quality of home; so as much as it’s an ‘M’ suburb, (Manunda, Manoora and Mooroobool), it’s a good quality of home, good elevation and there’s great views there.“The only thing that area lacks there is your facilities immediately around it. “You don’t have the school straight nearby, it’s not like Edge Hill where you can pop down and you’ve got somewhere for your coffee.“You’ve got to ‘step out’ to do something. “That’s where Edge Hill and Whitfield are quite popular, that you do have a very high quality of home but you’ve got that community around you. “You’ve got your local butcher, you’ve got your coffee shops, you’ve got somewhere to go for a drink on a Friday afternoon and be able to walk home. “You’ve also got your medical professionals reasonably close by.”He said the top-end homes were constructed to specific needs and they often remained on the market for extended periods of time. Due to most high-end, luxury properties being constructed specifically for families, Mr Quaid said couples with no kids or kids who had moved out were struggling to find suitable-sized, big-budget homes. “So they’ll tend to go into something like a penthouse apartment or a waterfront, which might be a smaller home,” he said. “Because a lot of the time on a waterfront property you’ve got more limited block size so you’ll have a little bit smaller house there.” REIQ Cairns zone chairman Tom Quaid said city views rate highly among luxury home buyers. PICTURE: BRENDAN RADKE“This is really looking at people with a budget of $1 million and above,” Mr Quaid said. “So areas, if you’re looking for a city view, are City View in Mooroobool, Whitfield, Edge Hill and The Peak in Brinsmead, which are elevated areas of Cairns, with nicer estates and larger, more modern homes with views that are really paramount. “You’re also looking at things like the northern beaches, so you’re on the beachfront itself or, again, you’re in those elevated positions with water views.”last_img read more

Shocking vandalism at ancient Beltany monument

first_imgOne of Ireland’s most important ancient monuments in Donegal has been damaged in a shocking act of vandalism. It is thought that the impressive Beltany Stone Circle has stood outside Raphoe for between four and five thousand years. But a grim discovery was made on the site last week, just days before Mayday (Bealtaine), which could harm its integrity. Mary Harte, who has been instrumental in researching and protecting the monument, was shocked to find that someone had moved stones and lit a fire on the site.Small stones were removed from the centre of the circle and arranged into a fire pit close by. Glass debris and burnt wood were also left behind. But the seriousness of the fire damage cannot be underestimated, said Ms Harte. “When you light a fire here you interfere with the veracity of the monument. We believe that Beltany is more than a stone circle and we are hoping to establish if there are ancient burial sites. But this burning could interfere with any future studies that are carried out,” she said. The incident has been reported to Gardaí and an appeal is launched for any information regarding who visited the site with the intent of lighting a fire.Mary said: “There are a number of issues with this act, we discovered that somebody was camping in the forest nearby and lighting a fire there too, and that has serious fire potential. It is evident it was the same people who lit the fire on the site because the firepit was the same.”An archaeologist representing the National Monuments Service visited Beltany today (Friday) to analyse the damage caused by the careless vandals.Mary believes it is no coincidence that the fire was lit before Lá Bealtaine, the Celtic festival of fires. Due to its name, Beltany has long been linked with this time of year.Beltany Stone Circle“I don’t think it was a random group of youths who did this, I think it was a visitor who knew and wanted to be there for Mayday,” she said. For Mary, this vandalism is an upsetting mark of disrespect against a priceless piece of history.“I’ve been here 35 years, I know the site very well and I’ve never seen anything like this happening“Whoever did this clearly didn’t care about the protection of the monument and was clearly oblivious to lighting a fire in the dry season.“Not only that, but it is an offence to interfere with a national monument. You cannot light fires, you cannot touch or move the stones.” However, Mary points out that some positive news has come from the events. “With the visit of the archaeologist this week, we hope to continue to work on studies into the ancient burials.“I will be working with the National Monuments Service on a strategy on how we can protect Beltany from this happening again and they are very interested in developing story plaques and signs to tell the story of the ancient landscape.”Anyone with any information which may help identify those behind the vandalism is asked to contact Gardaí in Letterkenny  on +353 74 9167116Shocking vandalism at ancient Beltany monument was last modified: May 3rd, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:beltany stone circlefiremary harteRaphoevandalismlast_img read more

New TrailGazers project to explore potential in Donegal’s walks and trails

first_imgDonegal will benefit from €600,00 from the TrailGazers project, which will look at new and innovative ways that walks and recreational trails can better link with the surrounding local and rural communities to enhance economic and social development. An Cathaoirleach Cllr. Nicholas Crossan launched the new €2.7m TrailGazers project on Monday last in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel. Donegal County Council will lead the project, with  approximately €600K going toward local development.Funded under the Atlantic Area Programme, this project will see Donegal County Council working with nine partners from different regions in Ireland, the UK, Spain, Portugal and France. Speaking at the launch Cllr. Crossan said “walking and hiking have increased in popularity and attract more and more visitors to the county to explore and experience all that Donegal and the region has to offer”.He added “walking and recreational trails are also important assets in our communities in that they help improve both our physical and mental wellbeing, they allow people to socialise much more easily and they also offer us an opportunity to get back in touch with nature providing sustainable access to special areas of conversation, wildlife sanctuaries and ancient woodlands and so on.”Anecdotal evidence suggests that the number of visitors to these walks and trails have increased in recent years, with people travelling further afield to participate in walking festivals, coastal and mountain challenges and sponsored walks.TrailGazers offers an opportunity for key stakeholders to come together to examine how best to engage with these new visitors and encourage them off the trails to explore what the wider area has to offer including for example cafes, craft shops, artisan foods, hotels and pubs and encourage them to stay longer.   This is the essence of what Trail Gazers is setting out to achieve – by examining how walks and recreational trails can be used as catalysts for the economic and social development of small rural economies and communities in an environmentally sustainable way The TrailGazers Project is funded under the Atlantic Area Programme and will be managed by Donegal County Council’s Research and Policy Unit along with nine partners from different regions in Ireland, the UK, Spain, Portugal and France.  All of the project partners bring with them a vast amount of experience and knowledge that will help develop and enhance the opportunities presented in this growing sector.New TrailGazers project to explore potential in Donegal’s walks and trails was last modified: June 28th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:TrailGazerslast_img read more

Watch a Ribosome in Action

first_imgA remarkable article about a remarkable machine: that’s what Chemical and Engineering News has published about the ribosome, a molecular machine vital to everything alive in the world.  Stu Borman’s article lavishes praise on the details of this assembly-line factory that translates RNA into proteins.  He surveys the history of investigation into the ribosome’s secrets.  The article includes several animations that illustrate current understanding of how the factory works.  Molecular springs and ratchets made out of molecules show off their robotic skill.  Things really get exciting when the translation movie revs up closer to actual speed. There’s buzz inside the intelligent design community whether to use this as the new mascot of ID instead of the bacterial flagellum.  It surely has a lot going for it.  This is a case of “irreducible complexity all the way down” to borrow a phrase Jonathan Wells elaborated on Michael Behe’s concept.  The flagellum still has an advantage of instant recognition – everyone recognizes an outboard motor when they see one – but the ribosome is even more astonishing.  Plus, it is universal, essential to life, and unevolved from bacteria to man.    If you remember that dazzling translation sequence in the film Unlocking the Mystery of Life, these new animations provided updated versions showing more detail from recent discoveries.  The mechanism gets more and more marvelous with each new discovery.  This machine is well worth getting to know.  The article admits there are many questions still to be answered: for instance, how are the correct transfer-RNAs called into position so quickly?  We have barely begun probing the depths of design of these molecular factories.    The answers to these and more questions will not come from Darwinian theory, which was not even mentioned in the article.  The future of molecular biology belongs to intelligent design.  Charlie, hand over the keys.  You’re fired.  What for?  Fraud, thinking such things could happen by a series of mistakes.  Dr. Paley, hello!  Nice to have you back.(Visited 24 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Brazilian industrial firm expands in SA

first_img26 July 2010Brazilian firm WEG has acquired a 51% stake in South Africa’s Zest Electric Group for an undisclosed amount as part of its African expansion strategy.Zest has been representing WEG electric products in southern Africa since its inception in the 1980s, when WEG began to explore international markets.Nearly 30 years later, WEG is an internationally respected supplier of first-class products to the industrial electrical energy sector. The significant growth experienced by WEG over the last few years promises to continue, as is evidenced by its ever expanding global network of businesses and manufacturing plants.“The investment by WEG in Zest demonstrates WEG’s commitment to the African market and its firm belief that the continent has much to offer in terms of future growth,” Zest founder and CEO James Blakemore said in a statement this week.Entrepreneurial cultureA fundamental part of the transaction is WEG’s recognition of how important Zest’s entrepreneurial culture and personalised approach to business and client service has been to its success.WEG is seeking to build on these foundations to drive more positive growth, and Zest’s clients and business partners stand to benefit significantly from the direct shareholding of a major global brand in the company’s operations.“The transaction will dramatically expand the Zest Group’s operational and strategic horizon, bringing new and exciting products and services to the businesses that have enjoyed such long relationships with Zest across the southern African region,” the company said.African market leaderDuring the 30 years that Zest has represented WEG in southern Africa, it has become the market leader in the supply of electric motors throughout Africa.According to the statement, diversification into electrical panels, generator sets and the electrical installation business has set the Zest Group up for ongoing growth in the electrical industry arena, and the introduction of WEG as a majority shareholder allows Zest to consolidate its market position.“Together, WEG and Zest have the resources, products, skills and localised experience to expand dramatically within the continent,” said Blakemore. “This expansion will hold a range of new opportunities for our people – from staff to business partners and customers – and opens a brand new chapter in the Zest story.”SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast — May 23, 2018

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Dry weather dominates the rest of the week. Today will be somewhat of a transition day, as we still likely have to deal with some lingering clouds across the state. But, we will see increasing amounts of sunshine today in the east and a nice day over the rest of the state, and no new moisture. We stay dry for tomorrow, Friday and most of Saturday. Saturday, we have to issue a disclaimer, though. Clouds will be building into southern Ohio through the day and at this point we can’t rule out the odd shower two in far southern Ohio. The coverage will be minor, but we see this action developing with more frequency in KY and WV Saturday, and we have to leave the door open into southern Ohio as an offshoot.Sunday looks to be the day where we see wholesale spreading of moisture into and across the state. It starts as hit and miss showers and we end up seeing several well-organized waves move through. Rain coverage for Sunday will be about 80% of Ohio. WE continue to see scattered showers move through for Memorial Day on Monday as well, but coverage pulls back to only 40%. Combined, we can see rains of .25”-1” over 75% of the state for Sunday and Monday of the holiday weekend. A few showers may still pop up over far eastern Ohio into early Tuesday, but action really will be dying down and moving away by then. The map above shows rain totals through the holiday weekend.Next week we are keeping dry weather in for the Tuesday-Thursday time frame. Our thoughts from yesterday regarding any tropical system look to be verifying, as most models are keeping the storm, but are just having it meander around the gulf coast rather than shooting northward. So, we have no reason to bring moisture in at this time. WE still are looking to bring our next system forward to the 1st, lasting into early the 3rd, Rain totals from the first early wave are minor at .1”-.5” over 60% of the state, but we are seeing signs of a second push that could bring up to 1 inch for the overnight of the 2nd into early the 3rd. That wave would push rain totals for the event to 100% of Ohio. That will be the piece to really watch. For the rest of the 11-16 day window we see a dry start to the week of the 4th, but still have a minor front working in around midweek that week, for the 6th. The front can bring up to half an inch of moisture with 70% coverage. Temps remain mostly normal to slightly above normal for the period.last_img read more
