John Medeski is a busy man. The prolific pianist is one of the most renowned players in the live music scene with countless projects under his belt, from Medeski, Martin & Wood, his long-running and critically acclaimed jazz-funk group with Billy Martin and Chris Wood, to Hudson, to a relatively new project featuring iconic jazz artists including drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist John Scofield, and bassist Larry Grenadier. This morning, John Medeski announced that another one of his many projects, John Medeski’s Mad Skillet, will release their self-titled debut album together, due out November 9th via Medeski Martin & Wood’s record label, Indirecto Records. Also featuring guitarist Will Bernard, sousaphonist Kirk Joseph, and drummer Terence Higgins, Mad Skillet was born out of the collaborative musical marathon that is New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. After coming together during a late-night in 2015, the quartet has appeared multiple times during the late-night hours of Jazz Fest tradition, in addition to touring across Europe together in 2017.“Something happens there. There’s something in the air, the water, the food,” says Medeski about New Orleans in a press release. “Every time we play, it really is magical. We get together and this thing lifts. It has a life of its own, beyond any of us. There’s a lot of ESP in New Orleans music. There’s a certain feel that New Orleans guys have that you can’t get anywhere else.”The press release details the upcoming album’s vibe and feel:Indeed, Mad Skillet has an X factor that sets it apart from the rest of Medeski’s remarkable discography. Throughout the 9-track effort, Higgins finds that elusive space shared among second-line, swing, funk, Afro-Cuban rhythms and hip-hop. Joseph, the scion of the late New Orleans lion Waldren “Frog” Joseph, holds down the low end with a power Medeski calls the “reality factor that comes through with the sousaphone: heart, mind, ears, breath.” As for Bernard, there’s “just something that happens to Will in New Orleans that is unexplainable,” Medeski says. Recorded at the Living Room, a studio housed in a Depression-era church straight across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans, Mad Skillet finds the guitarist showcasing the scope of his abilities and tones like never before. Medeski’s longtime friend and collaborator Scotty Hard provides invaluable sonic guidance at the mixing board. While Medeski’s name is out front, the album reflects a spirit of interplay and equality among members. Bernard contributes the sauntering soul of “Man About Town” and the rocking, Meters-esque workout “Little Miss Piggy.” Joseph offers “Adele,” whose gorgeous melodica melody evokes desert vistas and Ennio Morricone scores. Two spontaneous group compositions, “Tuna in a Can” and “Psychedelic Rhino,” present an engaging variation on the avant-garde. Sun Ra’s “The Golden Lady” is marked by atmospheric use of Medeski’s Mellotron bass-clarinet timbre and killer spy-movie guitar. The keyboardist’s tunes include “Invincible Bubble,” (hear/share) a cathartic, open-hearted tribute to his step-daughter; “Piri Piri,” with its hip, rapid-fire unison lines; and “The Heart of Soul,” for MMW’s late booking agent Chip Hooper, featuring masterful slide guitar and hard-grooving R&B piano. But more than a collection of tunes, Mad Skillet is about an energy and a city. “The hang before you play is just as important as the session,” Medeski concludes. “You have to really be open to get to that place, to get to that vibration where it’s all coming together.”Listen to the first track, “Invincible Bubble”, which was released today:John Medeski’s Mad Skillet – “Invincible Bubble”[Video: medeskimusic]John Medeski’s Mad Skillet will embark on a 13-date U.S. tour surrounding the release, beginning with a festival appearance at Utopiafest in Burnet, TX and including shows throughout the Midwest and Northeast.John Medeski’s Mad Skillet Track Listing1. Sign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York What began as a horrific tragedy became an altruistic mission for a Franklin Square woman who lost her 46-year-old husband to a drunken driver two years ago.Denise DeCrescito founded the Christopher DeCrescito Memorial Foundation last year to honor her late husband. Its two primary goals are to raise awareness among teens about drunk driving and to offer a monetary gift to the families of victims of those killed by drunken drivers, said organizer Cristina Lopez-O’Keeffe. The group’s second annual fundraiser will be held this weekend.“This money is meant to offset mortgage and rent payments or to go toward bills—just something practical to help at a time when everything is in chaos,” said Denise. “We hope we can bring a small amount of relief to a family overwhelmed with grief.”Chris DeCrescito was driving past the intersection of Franklin and Corona avenues on Feb. 27, 2013 when a Brian Daly—who was drunk and high on cocaine—ran a red light and crashed into Chris’ vehicle, killing him. Daly pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges before being sentenced to 12 years in prison. DeCrescito’s death was an unfathomable blow to his wheelchair-bound wife, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, and their three school-aged children. In honor of Chris’ passion for bowling and his birthday on March 17, the DeCrescito Foundation will hold its second annual family bowling event at Garden City Bowl from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 15. Last year, the foundation raised $14,000 to help nine families in need.“Chris was always the first one to volunteer for anything,” Denise said. “Habitat for Humanity, letters to Santa… wherever he could help someone he would.”Preserving his memory in a charity seemed only natural. Two types of tickets are available for the event. A blue ticket, $20, includes bowling, entertainment and refreshments. A pink ticket, $60, includes bowling, refreshments and participation in the “Star Gazer Outerstuff” half-time fashion show, organized by East Coast Starz. Free clothing and professional makeup and hairstyling services will be provided for participants as well as a “swag bag” to take home. There will also be a meet and greet and autograph signings with former New York Jets football player and Hofstra alum Wayne Chrebet as well as a variety of musical performances.Various sponsors have donated baskets and items that will be raffled off, including Rangers tickets, an electric guitar set and tickets to Aladdin on Broadway. Two of the families that were aided by the foundation will be in attendance. Denise said that many of the people they help want to give back in some way, whether by volunteering or spreading awareness about drunk driving.“Drunk driving is a problem and it’s not going away,” Denise said. “We need to do more practical things to prevent it.”To that end, the foundation is working with Long Island car services to provide discounts for people who are unable to drive themselves home. Denise said there is nothing wrong with alcohol. But it’s the poor choices people make while drinking that leads to these fatal consequences.CDMF also developed a customized jewelry line this year. A variety of bracelets and necklaces are available for purchase through their GoFundMe page. Each piece of jewelry is engraved with the initials of the organization, CDMF. Some jewelry also has “Drunk Driving Kills” on its tags. All the proceeds go to the families of those killed by drunk drivers.“It helps keep me focused on something I can do,” Denise said of the charity. “Chris would be proud of what we’re doing.”Denise said that everything they’re doing comes from a family that understands what other families in this situation are going through in a way that others cannot. And her efforts aren’t slowing down any time soon. The foundation is already planning an outdoor event for September at Eisenhower Park.“You either have someone to turn to or you don’t,” she said. “Many widows are in a position where they have to sell their homes or rejoin the work force after being a stay at home mom. We want to help as many people as we can.”Tickets for the event can be purchased via the websitegofundme.com/DeCrescito-Foundation. The event is also seeking raffle donations and lane sponsorships. Alexandra Football Association president, Moses Selolo, said residents of Alex, as it is known locally, are “over the moon”.Football for Hope will be an official World Cup event for the first time. Announcing the line-up, Fifa president Sepp Blatter expressed his high hopes for the event.“The Football for Hope Festival will be a unique opportunity for organisations using football as a tool for social development in every part of the world to interact with each other and to showcase their programmes on football’s biggest stage – the 2010 Fifa World Cup,” he said. The line-up features over 50 outstanding social football organisations from 32 countries as far-flung as Tahiti, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ecuador. There are 13 teams from Africa including the host team from Alex, eight teams from the Americas, two each from Asia and Oceania, one from the Middle East, and six from Europe.Among these are the Peace Team from the Israel- and Palestine-based Peres Center for Peace and Al Quds Association respectively, the Kilifi-based Moving the Goalposts that uses football to promote leadership among previously disempowered Kenyan women and girls, and Colombianitos which works with children affected by violence in war-torn Colombia.Other participating organisations strive to address landmine awareness in Cambodia, give purpose to street children in Senegal, further HIV and Aids education in South Africa, and help to integrate humanitarian refugee youth and their families into Australian society. These are just a few of the many football programmes around the world that offer hope and direction to children who would otherwise have none.Resolution through dialogueWhile celebrity football stars battle it out in stadiums around South Africa, the Beautiful Game will take on another dimension in Alex. The unique feature of the Football for Hope programme is that there are no referees. The mixed teams of boys and girls, aged between 15 and 18, are encouraged to resolve conflicts on the field themselves, through dialogue and negotiation.Having learned the art of dialogue in the game, the children take those skills with them into their communities.Teams will also work together in workshops and other activities, while cultural celebrations will highlight the diversity of participating nations. The organising partners hope that 2010 Football for Hope will help to heal the scars of the xenophobic terror that rocked Alexandra, and other communities, in 2008.Lasting legacySince 2007 and until 2010, the main focus of Football for Hope is the African continent. One of the programme’s goals is the construction of 20 Football for Hope centres – five in South Africa and 15 elsewhere on the continent – by 2010 at a cost of an estimated US$10-million (R82-million).The 20 Centres for 2010 is the official campaign of the World Cup and will result in a legacy of football and sustainable change that will endure long after the tourists have gone home.Together with Fifa and streetfootballworld, the project will be implemented by the non-profit organisation Architecture for Humanity and artificial turf pioneer Greenfields.“Our vision is that these centres will become hubs for cooperation and exchange among local organisations here in Africa, as well as on a global level,” said streetfootballworld MD Jürgen Griesbeck.Construction of the first of these centres got underway in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town at a sod-turning ceremony in May, attended by Griesbeck, Western Cape premier Helen Zille and Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan, among others.South African NGO Grassroot Soccer will manage the Khayelitsha centre. Each facility will consist of a one-star artificial turf and space to house social, healthcare and economic programmes.A one-star turf is used mainly for recreational and community purposes, but still has to successfully pass both laboratory and field tests to earn Fifa’s stamp of approval. A two-star turf is used for professional games.Ambassador of hopeAt the three-day Football for Hope workshop held during the Confederations Cup in June, Sepp Blatter announced the appointment of former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe as the initiative’s ambassador.Since his retirement from football in 2005, Soweto-born Radebe has worked as an ambassador of Fifa for SOS Children’s Villages to promote football for social development amongst youngsters.“I appreciate this appointment by Fifa to serve on this project,” he commented on his new role. “As a youngster from Soweto, our hope has always been football.”Do you have queries or comments about this article? OSU junior defensive end Tyquan Lewis (59) takes his position during their game on Nov. 19, 2016 at Spartan Stadium. The Buckeyes won 17-16. Credit: Lantern File PhotoIt’s rarely a bad thing to have too much depth at one position. That can most certainly be said of Ohio State’s defensive end group. With reigning Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year Tyquan Lewis returning for a fifth year to join senior Jalyn Holmes, sophomore Nick Bosa and redshirt junior Sam Hubbard, the Buckeyes boast arguably the most dominant quartet of defensive ends in college football.“Is it possible to have too many?” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer asked, sarcastically. “On defense, I’ve never thought about it. On offense it happened here. Every time I walk into a press conference, ‘Why did he only have four touches? What about this, what about that?’ Once again, I rather have that conversation than say we don’t have anybody.”With the defensive end talent, it can make the whole defense better, regardless of the set. Redshirt senior linebacker Chris Worley said the ability for the Buckeyes’ defensive linemen to put tons of pressure on the quarterback — even if the pressure does not result in a sack — makes the job of everyone else on the defensive side of the ball easier.“All those interceptions that Malik (Hooker) had and other guys, Marshon (Lattimore), a lot of times it’s, ‘Oh, did you see the Marshon play?’” Worley said. “But what you didn’t see was, down one through two or the two drives before that, the quarterback was probably hit six times upside the head and he was just trying to get the ball out and guys are making plays now.”With that depth on the roster, it could be challenging to fully maximize the talent. During the spring, the concept of a line that featured the four defensive ends with redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones in a heavy-loaded front five surfaced as a possibility in 2017.“Coaches like to say that we have to hold the checkers,” Meyer said on April 6. “You got five really good checkers right there, play them all at once.”Three months later, Meyer and his team are still toying with the idea of using all those playing pieces at the same time.“We have five like we have right now. I’ve kind of tapped them on the shoulder and say all those five guys are playing,” Meyer said. “It’s fun to have checkers like that, move them around.”A key aspect of the plan involves standing Hubbard up and possibly play a few steps behind the linemen. He might be built like a defensive lineman, standing at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds, but he still has the athleticism to play a unique form of defensive lineman.“I’ve never had this situation and it remains to be seen and I think (defensive line coach) Larry Johnson and (defensive coordinator) Greg Schiano know how to handle it or have had conversations that I’ve been involved into,” Meyer said. “I wouldn’t call (Hubbard) a linebacker but he might be something like that. Get him on the field.”Lewis believes that even though the team will not always be able to get all four defensive ends on the field at one time, there is nothing that separates those on the field from those who have to step off.“We don’t consider them backups,” Lewis said. “They’re just another asset to the starting lineup. That’s why they’re always featured in it. With a line this deep, it’s always fresh. Fresh rotation, nobody’s afraid of anything.”It is certain the team will not always utilize all four defensive ends at the same time. There’s even a chance it is just an idea that might not come to fruition. But Meyer has seemed adamant that with all that talent, there has to be some way to maximize those players.“You look at our four D-ends right now — that doesn’t include Chase Young or Jonathon Cooper — so we have four, and unfortunately we’ll probably lose three of them (to the NFL Draft),” Meyer said. “Bosa, Jalyn Holmes is in that same category, and Sam Hubbard. We have to find a way … to get them on the field.”
England’s captain Harry Kane has been linked with a move to Real after his goal took England to the semi-final but it seems Fernando Morientes does not want Tottenham Hotspur striker, Kane to switch to the Bernabeu. One of best Madrid strikers, Cristiano Ronaldo, just departed Real to Juve and left a space that can only be filled by a skilful striker. However, Morientes believes that Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane does not fit into the shoes but went further to acknowledge the greatness in Kane.“Normally, in Real Madrid, all the Galacticos can arrive to the Bernabeu,” he told talkSPORT.“But now it’s very difficult because Cristiano Ronaldo go out [Karim] Benzema stays up front as a number nine.Zidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.“And if Harry Kane comes to Madrid, maybe he’s not the same as Cristiano Ronaldo – we need something special.”“All the people say that the more important player now for Real Madrid is maybe Neymar, [Kylian] Mbappe if Benzema does what people thinks and stay for one more year.“We need another type of player, not a striker, because we have Benzema“And if Harry Kane came, two number nines in one big team is very difficult.”
