Immigrant arrests in Florida skyrocket as ICE aggressively carries out new…

first_imgAccording to its own data, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has escalated its enforcement efforts in Florida over the past year, arresting some 75 percent more immigrants in 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.ICE data shows that agents arrested some 6,192 immigrants in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands this year, a drastic increase over only 3,524 in 2016. Most troubling is that this increased enforcement is not aimed solely at immigrants who have committed crimes, but instead, all immigrants who do not have legal immigration status in the U.S..Reportedly, ICE’s Miami office Acting Field Director Michael Meade points to Trump’s January 25th Executive Order, effectively cancelling President Obama’s “prioritization” policy, which gave ICE directives to mainly focus on apprehending criminal immigrants, not law abiding immigrants who lacked immigration status. Under Trumps policy, any immigrant in the U.S. encountered by ICE who is in violation of immigration laws, regardless of criminal history, is a potential target for arrest and deportation. The message is clear – if ICE encounters you and you have no proof of legal immigration status, you will likely be arrested and processed for Removal from the U.S.New DACA bill gives Dreamers few protections and eliminates most family immigrationA new Bill introduced in Congress by Republicans called the SECURE Act of 2017, purports to provide protections to Dreamers currently under the DACA (Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals) program, in exchange for border security and immigration reforms, including changing the current U.S. Immigration system from family to merit based. But far from providing protections for Dreamers, the Bill instead incorporates the “Bridge Act” previously introduced in Congress, which merely offers a temporary three year DACA status and no path to a Green Card or Citizenship. Worse yet, the measure includes the controversial RAISE Act, which eliminates all family-based immigration (with exception of spouses and minor children) in favor of a merit-based system. Apparently Republican leaders see the Bill as their offer to Democrats in exchange for protection of Dreamers. Democrats on the other hand see the Bill as a “nonstarter”, saying they will not agree to any measure which offers less than permanent protections for Dreamers and adamantly refuse to trade DACA protections for any limits on family immigration. As the standoff continues, thousands of Dreamers and their supporters stage rallies and peaceful protests in Washington and across the country, in hopes of swaying Trump and the Republicans.Participants vow to continue to rally and have their voices heard until congress passes a “Clean” Dream Act. Until then, readers are urged to contact Republican members of Congress to voice support of a permanent standalone DACA law, without any other provisions such as border policies and restrictions on legal immigration.  Understanding the most common immigration bars:The Five-Year Bar:  Immigrants who are found inadmissible and immediately removed/deported upon arrival at a U.S. port and those who are removed/deported shortly after arrival in the U.S., who have been placed in removal proceedings are ineligible to return to the U.S. for 5 years. The Ten-Year Bar: Immigrants who have a removal order issued by Immigration judge are ineligible to return to the U.S. for 10 years. The Twenty-Year Bar:  Immigrants who are deported and who attempt to reenter the U.S. prior to the expiration of the ten-year ban can receive an additional 10 year bar for a total of 20 years. The Permanent Bar:  Immigrants who are convicted of an aggravated felony, entered without permission after being removed, or illegally reentered the U.S. after having previously been in the U.S. unlawfully for more than one year, may be permanently barred from ever entering the U.S.last_img read more

Chris Gayle Breaks Lara’s Record While Windies Lose ODI

first_imgPORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Veteran opener Chris Gayle broke Brian Lara’s record for the most runs by a West Indies batsman in One-Day Internationals but his failure typified the Caribbean side’s brittle batting and overshadowed the achievement, as the hosts crashed to a 59-run defeat under Duckworth-Lewis-Stern in the second ODI here Sunday.Chasing a revised target of 270 off 46 overs following a rain break 13 overs into their run chase at Queen’s Park Oval, West Indies were toppled for 210 with four overs remaining, to fall behind 1-0 in the three-match series.Opener Evin Lewis, playing in front of his home crowd, top-scored with 65 while fellow countryman Nicholas Pooran chimed in with 42 but West Indies lost wickets at key stages to watch their chase come apart at the seams. In fact, they appeared well en route to victory at 148 for three in the 28th over but collapsed and lost their last seven wickets for 62 runs in quick time.Bhuvneshwar Kumar led India’s attack with four for 31 while fellow new-ball seamer Mohammed Shami claimed two for 39 and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, two for 59.India captain Virat Kohli had earlier struck his 42nd One-Day International hundred to become his country’s second-highest run-scorer in ODIs as the visitors reached 279 for seven off their 50 overs, after choosing to bat first. The right-hander’s polished 120, which also saw him surpass Pakistani Javed Miandad for the highest ODI aggregate against West Indies, left him only behind legend Sachin Tendulkar in India’s all-time ODI scoring charts. Faced with a challenging but hardly daunting target, West Indies were handed a decent start of 45 off 57 deliveries for the first wicket by Lewis and Gayle. Not for the first time, Gayle struggled with momentum but passed Lara’s mark of 10 405 runs when he took a single to third man at the start of the ninth over.Unsurprisingly, however, he perished in the following over after facing 24 balls for his 11, lbw to a full-length delivery from Kumar, with the resulting review more out of desperation than prudence.Shai Hope then played on to left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed in the 13th over for five as the Windies reached 56 for two at the rain break. With the target revised, Lewis set about building the foundation for a possible win, facing 80 balls and striking eight fours and a six as he anchored two key partnerships to tilt the balance in the home side’s favour. First, he put on 40 or the third wicket with Shimron Hetmyer (18) before adding a further 56 for the fourth with Pooran. He lost Hetmyer at the end of the 18th over, caught at cover off Kuldeep miscuing a pull before he then departed in the 28th over, hauled in at cover by Kohli also off Kuldeep.Even then, West Indies still looked safe bets to prevail as Pooran struck four fours and a six off 52 balls in a 31-run, fifth-wicket stand with Chase (18).But with the partnership threatening, Kumar removed both in the 35th over in a wretched period that saw West Indies lose four wickets for three runs in the space of 14 balls, as India regained control of the contest. Seamer Carlos Brathwaite was the best bowler with three for 53 from his 10 overs.West Indies struck as early as the third ball of the morning when left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell got one to straighten and trap Shikhar Dhawan lbw for two, courtesy of DRS.last_img read more

Masks On!

first_imgSome cities in South Florida, such as Sunrise and Miramar, have now mandated the wearing of masks, bandanas or other face coverings in public spaces, bringing to the fore the debate over whether we need to wear masks as a means of ‘flattening the curve’ or containing the spread of COVID-19.Many people are already practicing social distancing and hand-washing as recommended, but this is another layer of protection that the medical and scientific communities are now saying will have far-reaching positive effects. This position did not arrive overnight, as reputable international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) took ambivalent positions on such a need. But as the coronavirus crisis deepens—leaving in its terrible path painful stories of survival and heart-wrenching accounts of deaths—these positions have evolved to the point where both organizations now adopt a more pragmatic approach to dealing with this clear and present danger to humankind. As late as  March, both the WHO and the CDC’s position was that wearing masks was not necessary for the general population, except in situations where people were visibly sick especially with bouts of coughing. This position had its genesis in the stance taken by U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome M. Adams, who early in February advisably warned against purchasing medical masks, noting that it would not aid in the prevention of the coronavirus. This was generally thought, in some quarters, to be a position born out of trying to reserve this special piece of PPE equipment for the health workers, who were on the frontline in the war against this pandemic. So what has caused this sea-change in advice from global public health leadership which relies primarily on hard data and evidence in drawing their conclusions? It is the fact that the rate, widespread nature, and prevalence of COVID-19, confounded the previous ‘modeling’ that were available in the medical and scientific community.WHO, also in February, made the important note that transmission of the dreaded virus via asymptomatic persons was ‘rare’ but had to backtrack on these statements soon after, when evidence to the contrary emerged very forcibly. This was further confirmed by evidence presented by the CDC in late March, regarding the infection rate among the ‘ill-fated’ Diamond Princess cruise liner, which found out that among the 700 passengers and crew that were found to be infected, 46.5 percent did not have any symptoms of the COVID-19 when they were initially tested. The CDC then made the all-important deduction “that a high proportion of asymptomatic infections could partially explain the high attack rate among passengers and crew members.”Carolyn Machamer, Professor of Cell Biology from John Hopkins School of Medicine and specialist in coronavirus, was very clear in her study about the possibilities of aerosolization of transmission of COVID-19, given the fact that it can last up to three hours in the air. Therefore, normal human actions such as speaking, coughing, sneezing are mediums through which transmission can occur. It is therefore through an abundance of caution that the advocates argue that masks are now placed in the mix to bolster us from the asymptomatic carriers, who exhibit none of usual easily identifiable symptoms of cough, fever and muscle aches, but are nonetheless, significant transmitters of this dreaded disease.Although the studies and the debate over the efficacy of using masks to help contain the virus are ongoing, what is unquestionable is that using masks in this fight is better than not using anything at all. The barrier which it provides you from being ‘showered’ during normal speaking with an individual, much less when you are the unfortunate recipient of a sneeze or cough, could mean the difference between ending up being hospitalized or suffering excruciating pain, discomfort or death, as is the case in the present situation.Furthermore, this very normal practice of covering your nose and mouth to prevent droplets whenever we sneeze or cough is a normal part of one’s day-to-day activity, which is only being enhanced by a mask in these challenging times of COVID-19. We are only doing our community and ourselves a world of good, as wearing a mask is a low-risk intervention in staunching the spread of this virus. When we all don a mask, we are not only protecting ourselves, we are protecting everyone in our community.Masks on!last_img read more

Spain’s 2019 budget seeks to implement tough betting advertising code

first_img Spanish news sources report that the upcoming 2019 budget will likely carry severe advertising restrictions for licensed gambling/betting incumbents, as the PSOE minority government seeks to revamp Spain’s advertising code.Last week, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (PSOE – Socialist Workers Party) struck a budget proposal deal with socialist Podemos party leader Pablo Iglesias.Branded as Spain’s ‘socially progressive budget’, PSOE moves towards its first legislative victory since taking leadership of Spain’s government last June, following the resignation of Partido Popular’s Mariano Rajoy attached to multiple corruption charges.Striking a budget agreement with Podemos, Sanchez and the minority PSOE seek to stave off opposition calls for a snap general election in 2019.The agreed budget is reported to have a mandate seeking to restrict/limit the advertising of ‘predatory industries’ (betting, pay-day loans, credit lending) targeting Spanish consumers, a governance directive pursued by Podemos since 2015.All Spanish news sources report that PSOE and Podemos will seek to toughen Spain’s advertising standards with regards to betting advertising/marketing practices. However, it remains unclear what exact restrictions the government will choose to implement.Spanish regulator DGOJ is currently undertaking its third licensing window, which is due to close on 17 December 2018, expanding Spain’s online gambling marketplace. Newspaper El Pais reports that PSOE will treat ‘betting like tobacco’, implementing tougher restrictions aimed at protecting minors and vulnerable consumers.Meanwhile, details that PSOE and Podemos, will move to significantly reduce betting related adverts aired during TV sports broadcasts, and throughout Radio verticals.Furthermore, a new advertising code would ban Spanish licensed operators from utilising celebrities or athletes to promote gambling products/services.The 2019 budget agreement will have caught the eye of Spanish football clubs, who have previously been criticised by Pablo Iglesias and Podemos for their ‘indifference to betting advertising and sponsorships’.PSOE will present its budget to the EU on 15 October, seeking to gain approval on its spending plans and fiscal policies. The budget will then be forwarded to Spain’s Congress for final voting, in which PSOE and Podemos require 176 votes for its approval.
