Real Madrid dropped points for the second LaLiga match in succession as they slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat at home to struggling Real Sociedad on Sunday, seeing Lucas Vazquez sent off in the process.Santiago Solari’s men were looking to make the most of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla drawing earlier in the day but could now end the weekend 10 points adrift of Barcelona.Madrid were behind early on as Willian Jose converted a third-minute penalty and the home side were unable to pull level before half-time. Despite Vazquez’s red card for two bookings, Madrid remained well on top after the interval and should have had a penalty when goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli seemed to trip Vinicius Jr, but La Real escaped on that occasion and struck again through Ruben Pardo late on to end a run of four consecutive league defeats.Madrid found themselves with an uphill task as Willian Jose emphatically dispatched his spot-kick following Casemiro’s clumsily foul on Mikel Merino. The hosts created several chances in response – Karim Benzema just missing the bottom-right corner from close range in the 11th minute, shortly before Rulli denied Vinicius from a tight angle.Luka Modric then forced Rulli into a smart stop down to his right from distance but they came closest just prior to the break – Vazquez’s chipped cross-cum-shot coming back off the post.Madrid turned things up a notch after the break, only for Vazquez to collect a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Merino.Soon afterwards, Vinicius was unlucky to not be given a penalty when he appeared to be fouled by the sprawling Rulli.La Real took full advantage, hitting Madrid on the break six minutes from the end and Pardo – a second-half introduction – nodded in Willian Jose’s cross to leave Madrid beaten. 21 – No other La Liga team has hit the woodwork more times than Real Madrid this season in all competitions (level with Barcelona). Questions marks remain over VAR in LaLigaThere is little doubt that, when used properly, VAR is a good thing for football. But this match proved it is not beyond criticism, as Vinicius was not given a penalty for what appeared to be a clear foul in the second half. It is unclear whether it was reviewed at all, but the fact nothing was given suggests it was not. Rulli decisive for La RealMadrid certainly had enough opportunities to win it, but Rulli produced one his best displays for a long time, making several big saves. He has had a difficult time in the last couple of years, but this was a performance that showed his true potential.Casemiro fails to make amendsIt was a day to forget for Casemiro. His early error resulted in the penalty and he never recovered from that as Madrid were poor in midfield. He was unsurprisingly withdrawn for Isco, who produced an improvement.Key Opta facts- Real Sociedad have won a LaLiga game against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu for the first time since May 2004, when they triumphed 4-1.- William Jose’s early strike is the fastest penalty goal scored for any team at Santiago Bernabeu in LaLiga in the 21st century (144 seconds).- Imanol Alguacil is the fourth Real Sociedad manager to win a LaLiga game at Santiago Bernabeu after Raynald Denoueix in 2004, John Toshack in 1994 and Javier Exposito in 1991.- Vazquez has been sent off for the first time for Real Madrid after 160 games in all competitions.- No other La Liga team have hit post and bar more times than Real Madrid this season in all competitions (21, level with Barcelona).11 – @vini11Oficial attempted 12 dribbles against Real Sociedad (six dribbles completed), more than any other @realmadriden player in a @LaLigaEN game this season. Neymar has ensured an interesting reception when he belatedly returns to France next week by claiming that one of his favourite memories in football was beating Paris Saint-Germain 6-1 with Barcelona. The Brazilian, constantly linked with a return to Spain this summer, has already irked PSG officials by missing the start of pre-season training to attend a charity event with Instituto Neymar, the foundation he set up in 2013. Speaking at the event, Neymar was asked for his best memory from his football career to date. He had two: winning Olympic gold with Brazil in 2016, and humiliating his current club with the infamous 6-1 comeback in 2017. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? “When we won against PSG with Barcelona it was completely… we all went crazy afterwards,” Neymar said. “I believe it was the best feeling for all of us. “The ‘Remontada’ against Paris, what we felt when we scored the sixth goal… I have never felt anything like this. It was incredible!” Neymar scored twice in that game, a stunning free kick in the 88th minute and a penalty in the 91st to bring Barca to within touching distance of one of the most memorable comebacks of all time. Sergi Roberto’s 95th-minute winner completed the turnaround, after a scarcely believable 4-0 defeat in Paris had seemed set to dump Barca out of the Champions League.Given PSG’s much talked-about failure to make an impression in Europe despite spending huge sums on the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, it isn’t hard to imagine Neymar’s comments – while understandable – will annoy team-mates, officials and fans alike at his current side. With Barcelona having confirmed the signing of Antoine Griezmann , fans are desperate to see a return for Neymar to create a front three that would rival the famous ‘MSN’ lineup that the Brazilian was a part of.He certainly seems to be angling for the move, but whether the La Liga champions would be able to sign both players in one window remains to be seen.On Saturday, he posted a video to his Instagram story showing a picture of himself in a Barcelona shirt and a Bible verse – though his intention behind the upload was far from clear.

(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)The Midwest was reportedly all set to get a major bowl game in the coming years, with a historic MLB stadium set to host the game.Unfortunately, though, that games appear to have been called off – for now, at least.Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reports that the bowl game coming to Wrigley Field has been called off.Sources tell Trib: Wrigley Field bowl game is OFF for now:https://t.co/coEsjrSDii— Teddy Greenstein (@TeddyGreenstein) July 26, 2018From his report:The breakdown in negotiations occurred because Cubs officials wanted a premier spot in the Big Ten bowl lineup — the ability to land the league’s No. 3 or No. 4 team. When Big Ten officials queried schools, the response was that they’d prefer a warm-weather destination. The Cubs had the finances arranged for a bowl game at Wrigley but declined to make a deal for a lower-slotted Big Ten team. The two sides amicably parted ways and said they might revisit down the road.“The Cubs wanted to have a higher-placed team and a potentially more excited fan base,” a source said. “The Cubs said they’re not looking for a lower-tier bowl game; they’re very selective in what they do.”That might be the right move, honestly. If the Midwest is going to get a bowl game outdoors, it should feature some big-time teams.Hopefully this can be worked out.
BATON ROUGE, LA – OCTOBER 22: Head coach Ed Orgeron of the LSU Tigers calls a timeout during the second half of a game against the Mississippi Rebels at Tiger Stadium on October 22, 2016 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (Photo by Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images)LSU head coach Ed Orgeron is facing some serious criticism for some of his decisions against No. 1 Alabama at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this evening. The Tigers’ offense has been stifled all evening by the Crimson Tide and some of the decision making hasn’t helped.LSU has been conservative on several 4th downs inside Alabama’s territory. The Tigers, trailing 22-0, just elected to kick a field goal inside the Crimson Tide’s 20-yard line. It was a long 4th down attempt, but kicking a field goal down three scores with about 10 minutes to play doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. And, of course, LSU’s kicker missed it.LSU is getting crushed for the decision making.LSU still needs 8 field goals to win— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) November 4, 2018Field goal why LSU?— Tony Gerdeman (@TonyGerdeman) November 4, 2018LSU, trailing 22-0 in the 4th quarter on its first red-zone possession of the night, opts for a field goal to cut a three-score deficit to a three-score deficit.— Matt Hinton (@MattRHinton) November 4, 2018They missed it because justice.— Matt Hinton (@MattRHinton) November 4, 2018Down 22-0 to the No. 1 team in the country —three touchdowns, for you math nerds at home— and you attempt (and miss) a field goal.Great coaching.Always love the please-let-us-score-to-avoid-a-shutout game plan.— Michael Castillo (@MichaelCastFS) November 4, 2018LSU continues to trail Alabama, 22-0, at Tiger Stadium. FS1College football analyst Danny Kanell often goes against the grain when it comes to how he ranks the top teams in the country. His latest – a top eight after week 10 – is ruffling a few feathers.Kanell, who often gets criticized for how he regards the SEC, only has one team from the league in his top eight. Alabama is his top squad, but Georgia, the team the Crimson Tide will play in the SEC title game next month, is missing.Kanell also leaves out Ohio State, which is less of an argument. But his decision to put West Virginia at No. 5 is turning some heads. His inclusion of UCF also has many upset. Kanell makes it clear – with a space – that there’s a gap after Alabama and Clemson.Zero change in the top 4 of my #DKtop8 because I use common sense.1. Bama 2. Clemson3. Notre Dame 4. Michigan 5. Did Kanell get it right with his top 8? FS1Week 2 of the college football season is in the books and while there were a number of upsets and near upsets, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement at the top.On Sunday, college football analyst Danny Kanell broke down his top 8 teams after week 2.The biggest riser on his list was, of course, LSU. The Tigers are coming off a 45-38 win over the Texas Longhorns at Darrell K.
